Birute Galdikas

Primatologist Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas, who in the 1960’s along with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey were sent by anthropologist Louis Leakey to Asia and Africa to study great apes, carries an orangutan named Isabel with an assistant before her release into the wild at Tanjung Puting National Park on Borneo island, Indonesia, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. There are an estimated 60,000 orangutans left in the wild, mostly live in small and scattered populations that are unlikely to survive the onslaught on forests much longer, with an estimated 300 football fields of trees are cleared every hour.
