Alu elements are “jumping genes” that can duplicate and then insert into new locations in the genome. Whereas Alu elements have been surprisingly inactive in the orangutan genome, leading to only a small number of new insertions, the human genome has repeatedly been rearranged due to a large number of new insertions. Alu elements are therefore considered an important driving force in human evolution.
